Shopify’s OOTB (Out Of The Box) web store search engine is actually fairly robust, however it does come with some limitations:
Although it is easy to add a sidebar to filter products, unfortunately, it’s not linked with search natively. So when a web store customer searches for “t-shirt”, they will be presented with a search engine results page listing of “t-shirts”, but they don’t get the faceted searching filter options they would on the collection page (e.g. the ability to narrow the search to only purple t-shirts).
Instead, the customer would be filtering across all of your store’s products if you started pressing those filter buttons.
The solution to this Issue with your Shopify store that the SCG team frequently suggests is to configure a specialized search engine, supplanting the native functionality.
We use tools such as SearchSpring,
Elastic Search and
Klevu Oy, which provide integrated suggestive search, faceted filtering and sophisticated merchandising.
